EU-Canada Strategic Partnership Agreement

The "Strategic Partnership Agreement between the European Union and its Member States, of the one part, and Canada, of the other part" was signed in Brussels on 30 October 2016 and provisionally entered into force on 1 April 2017.

This agreement seeks to deepen political dialogue and cooperation between the EU and Canada and to strengthen relations in fields such as human rights, international peace and security, economic and sustainable development, justice, freedom and security.

Negotiations for the SPA launched in September 2011, alongside the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA), with a view to replacing the outdated 1976 Framework Agreement for Commercial and Economic Cooperation. The Agreement was initialled in September 2014 and was adopted by the European Commission in April 2015.
